In a powerful move to position New Zealand as a top global study destination, the government has announced a new roadmap designed to strengthen international student enrolments, boost economic contribution, and support innovation. This comes as part of the newly launched International Education: Going for Growth Plan, which outlines key strategies through to 2034.

“We will double the value of international education by 2034—growing from $3.6 billion in 2024 to an ambitious $7.2 billion by 2034,” said New Zealand Education Minister Erica Stanford, highlighting the government’s strong commitment to making the country a top global destination for international students. She has also emphasized the vital role international students play not only in education but in driving research, trade, and job creation across the country.

New Policy Updates: More Opportunities for Global Students

To make New Zealand more attractive and competitive, the Government is introducing new benefits and exploring future visa enhancements:

  • From November 2025, international students will be allowed to work up to 25 hours per week during their studies (up from the current 20 hours).

  • These extended work rights will now apply to all tertiary-level students, including those on short-term exchange and study abroad programs.

  • The Government is also evaluating the introduction of a short-term graduate work visa (up to 6 months) to support students transitioning into the workforce.

  • Improvements are on the way to simplify multi-year student visa applications, reducing red tape and encouraging longer-term study commitments.
