NEW COST-OF-LIVING RULES FOR CANADA STUDENT VISA APPLICANTS COMING SEPTEMBER 2025

If studying in Canada is on your radar, it’s time to take a serious look at your financial readiness. From September 1, 2025, Canada will implement higher minimum cost-of-living requirements for international students applying for a study permit (excluding Quebec). This increase doesn’t cover tuition—it’s the amount you need to demonstrate simply to prove you can afford to live in Canada.

As per the updated guidelines from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the financial proof required for a single study permit applicant will rise from CAD $20,635 to CAD $22,895—a jump of almost 11% within a year.

How much money you need?

If you apply for a study permit on or after September 1, 2025, you need to meet these new requirements for financial support. This table tells you how much money you need to support yourself and your family members in Canada.

All provinces/territories except Quebec

Who’s Exempt from the Upcoming Increase?

Not everyone will be impacted by the new financial requirements. If you submit your study permit application before September 1, 2025, the current minimum of CAD $20,635 will still apply. Additionally, students applying to institutions in Quebec are not affected, as the province follows its own separate financial criteria.

✅ What You Should Do Now

  • Review your financial status – check the latest thresholds.

  • Gather valid proof – bank documents, investment statements, etc.

  • Calculate dependents – factor in additional costs.

  • Allow buffer – always have funds above the minimum.

  • Get expert help – align your application with current regulations to reduce risk.

With the increased cost‑of‑living requirements coming into effect on September 1, 2025, it's more important than ever to prepare carefully. Having the proper funds not only meets Canadian regulations—it ensures you're set for a successful and stress‑free study experience.
