Migrating to Australia is a dream shared by thousands of individuals and families worldwide. With its strong economy, high standard of living, multicultural society, and world-class education and healthcare systems, Australia continues to be a top destination for skilled migrants, students, and families.
However, Australian migration is not a one-size-fits-all process. It involves various visa categories, eligibility requirements, points-based assessments, and regulatory compliance. As a registered migration agent, I am sharing some important considerations you must keep in mind before starting your migration journey.
Here Are:
Skilled Occupation Lists (SOLs):
Australia has various skilled occupation lists (e.g., Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), Regional Occupation List (ROL), and the new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) under the "Skills in Demand" visa). Your profession must be on an eligible list for the specific visa you are applying for.
Skills Assessment:
You will need to have your qualifications and work experience assessed by the relevant Australian assessing authority for your profession.
Popular assessing bodies include:
VETASSESS (for general professionals)
ACS (for IT professionals)
Engineers Australia (for engineering professionals)
TRA (for trade occupations)
Each body has its own criteria for assessing qualifications and work experience, so getting this right is essential.
English Language Proficiency:
You will need to demonstrate competent English language skills through tests like IELTS or PTE. Higher scores not only help meet visa requirements but also earn additional points. Some occupations and visa subclasses may have specific score thresholds.
Points Test:
For most skilled visas, Australia uses a points-based system. Points are awarded based on:
Age
English language ability
Educational qualifications
Skilled work experience (in and outside Australia)
Partner skills
Australian study and work, etc…
A minimum of 65 points is required to be eligible to apply for an Expression of Interest (EOI), but higher scores increase your chances of receiving an invitation.
State and Regional Sponsorship Opportunities:
Many skilled visas require nomination by an Australian state or territory, which often have their own specific lists of in-demand occupations. Targeting a regional area can greatly enhance your migration success.
Migration is more than just a visa—it's a life transformation. Whether you're aiming to build your career, reunite with family, or gain world-class education in Australia, making the right choices from day one is critical.
