nine approved English tests Australia visa

Exciting news for aspiring migrants to Australia! The Department of Home Affairs has expanded the list of approved English language tests, offering more flexibility for visa applicants. This change is a significant development, providing more options for you to meet the English proficiency requirements for your Australian visa application.

WHAT’S CHANGED?

In addition to the previously accepted IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, OET, and Cambridge C1 Advanced, three new tests are now approved:

  • CELPIP General

  • LanguageCert Academic Test

  • Michigan English Test (MET)

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU?

  • More choice, less stress: With nine recognised tests across diverse formats and providers, you can select the one that best fits your schedule, location, and strengths. Some of the new tests may have different formats, which could be an advantage for individuals who perform better in a specific testing environment.

  • Flexible pathways: New additions like CELPIP, LanguageCert, and MET open alternatives beyond IELTS and TOEFL—particularly helpful in regions where these tests may be limited.

  • Maintain high standards: While options expand, DHA’s score thresholds remain rigorous. Each test must be taken at a secure test centre; online or at-home versions are not accepted.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT TEST?

With so many options, it's important to choose the right test for your specific visa subclass. Each visa has a different English language requirement, and the minimum scores vary. For example, a student visa will have a different requirement from a skilled migration visa.

I strongly recommend consulting with a registered migration agent to determine the correct test and score for your situation. As a registered agent, I can provide you with personalized advice and guidance to navigate the visa application process smoothly.
